A Tripura man, residing in Saudi Arabia, was booked under the Muslim Women’s Protection of Rights of Marriage Act for purportedly giving instant triple talaq to his wife over a phone message, officials said.
On October 27, Abul Hossain (35) sent a phone text to his wife in India which said he is severing relations with his wife and he considers the marriage over, the police said. Abdul has been living in Saudi Arabia since 2015.
Speaking to indianexpress.com, North Tripura Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty said, “We registered a FIR from one Salma Begin of Jolaibari village in Kadamtala area of North district on Wednesday night against her husband for giving her instant triple talaq over SMS from Saudi Arabia, where he works as a labourer.”
According to the complainant, Abul took Rs 45,000 from his in-laws soon after marriage and went to Saudi Arabia to earn a livelihood, the official said.
Apart from her husband, Salma accused four others in her FIR alleging domestic violence.
The police have started a search for the accused persons. No arrests have been made so far. The authorities are contemplating to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Saudi Arabia for extraditing Abul.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 was passed in the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon session. After the Bill was approved, instant triple talaq was made a criminal offence.
