  • The city8217;s environment, With the Pune Municipal Corporation PMC embarking on an urban forest and horticulture development plan which will be implemented over a period of 10 years. It aims at achieving environment protection in an integrated manner in both urban and rural areas. This project comes in the wake of the realisation that the merger of 17 villages into the PMC has increased the scope for tree plantation and waste land development.
  • The pimpri-chinchwad municipal corporation and its residents, Under whose initiative, a quarry, spread over 15 acres in Vidyanagar, has now developed into a picnic spot with several recreational facilities. The quarry earlier had seen much release of chemical effluents and an unchecked growth of water hyacinth, causing many health hazards to the residents.
  • The khadki cantonment board, that finally decided to remove stalls causing major traffic problems in civil areas, besides the illegal ones in the defence areas of the cantonment.

  • Water development in talukas, With the inauguration of the 15-day watershed development programme, Panlot Pandhrawada, aimed at spreading the awareness of efficient water management in these places.

  • Baif, The pune-based non-governmental organisation, Whose comprehensive tribal rehabilitation programme has seen the lives of the tribals of Dharampur, an inconspicuous taluka in the Valsad district of Gujarat, undergo a remarkable transformation. Little water and an abysmally low standard of living have now given way to flourishing cashew and mango orchards and increasing income levels.

  • Municipal Commissioner Arun Bhatia, Whose style of functioning incurred the ire and indignation of many over the week. Mayor Dutta Gaikwad and the elected representatives geared up to table a motion demanding the commissioner8217;s removal, 27 civic officers went on a one-and-a-half-month protest leave and one of the 20 officers who had been suspended by Bhatia issued him a defamation notice. A busy week for Bhatia!
