November 23: Third seed Vishal Punna and No 4 Anjan Viplav, both Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra8217;s No 8 Kedar Shah crashed out of the JS Pereira Memorial tennis championship at the Bandra Gymkhana today.

Maharashtra junior Benjamin Xavier shocked Punna 6-4, 6-4 while big-serving Viplav was surprised by Tamil Nadu8217;s R Narendran 4-6, 6-4, 4-6. Kedar Shah, finalist in the third leg doubles of the ITF Satellite Circuit at Pune recently was sent packing by part-time player and coach at the Garden Tennis Academy Mayur Vasant 0-6, 2-6.

On a day of surprises, the icing on the cake was top seed and India No 5 Vinod Sridhar discomfort in his second round match against Kunal Bhojwani. The TN player struggled during his unexpectedly difficult 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 path to the quarter-final.

Second seed Sanzaruz Zaman WB routed Kamlesh Shukla UP 6-1, 6-2 to join sixth seed Mohammed Yaseer Arafat AP, who beat lucky loser Vimal Kirthi TN 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
