White House panel to study doping problem
WASHINGTON:
President Bill Clinton has established a White House panel on performance-enhancing drugs in Sports that will recommend ways the federal government can combat the problem.

8220;The use of drugs in Sports has reached a level that endangers not just the legitimacy of athletic competition but also the lives and health of athletes,8221; an executive order signed by Clinton on Wednesday said.

Daughters of Ali-Frazier to fight
NEW YORK:
Laila Ali and Jacqueline Frazier Lyde, the daughters of two legendary heavyweight boxing champions, have agreed to face each other next March, the 30th anniversary of their famous fathers8217; first fight.

Ali won a unanimous 12-round decision over Frazier in their 1974 rematch here and stopped him after 14 rounds in Manila. Pete Lyde, Frazier-Lyde8217;s husband, said the two women have agreed upon the date and the site will depend on who submits the best purse bid. Both women are unbeaten. Ali, 22, is 7-0 in a 10-month career. Frazier-Lyde is 4-0.

S Korea wants Confederations Cup
SEOUL:
South Korea said on Thursday that it still wants to host next year8217;s Confederations Cup even though co-host Japan has told football8217;s governing body Fifa it wants no part in the tournament.

A spokesman for the Korea Football Association told newsmen that the organisation regretted the decision by Japan, who will also share the 2002 World Cup finals with South Korea. 8220;But we plan to go ahead with it without Japan joining. We have tentatively set the start date for June 9 in 2001 with eight countries expected to participate,8221; he said.

Perec pulls out of Montauban meet
PARIS:
France8217;s triple Olympic champion Marie-Jose Perec has pulled out of next Tuesday8217;s track meet in the French town of Montauban where she was due to compete in the 200 metres, her agent Annick Avierinos has announced.

8220;Marie-Jo will not run at Montauban because her manager Yukka Harkonenn could not reach an agreement with the organisers,8221; Avierinos said. 8220;He is in negotiations with the organisers at Monaco,8221; she added. It was originally planned that Perec would run the 200 at Montauban on August 15, followed by a 400 metre run at Monaco three days later with another run in the same event at Brussels on the 25th.
