Elderly couple in Delhi’s Greater Kailash loses Rs 14 crore in digital arrest fraud case

An elderly couple living in South Delhi’s Greater Kailash allegedly lost Rs 14 crore after the 77-year-old woman and her husband were duped by callers impersonating officials of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), police said on Saturday.
According to the police complaint, the woman received a phone call from an unidentified person on December 24, 2025, claiming to be a TRAI official. The caller alleged that her mobile number was being used for offensive and abusive calls and further accused her of holding black money and being involved in money-laundering activities.
According to the police, the woman and her husband, both doctors, had returned from the United States and had been living in Greater Kailash since 2016. Their children are settled abroad.
The accused allegedly exploited the fact that the couple were living an isolated life and repeatedly threatened them with arrest and legal action, forcing them to remain on continuous phone and video calls, police said.
The fraudsters allegedly provided the woman with multiple bank account details, persuading her to transfer funds to “clear” the accusations. Acting under pressure and fear, the complainant transferred a total amount of Rs 14 crore to the accounts provided by the callers.
The fraud came to light after the calls stopped on January 9, prompting the couple to approach the authorities.
The couple reported the matter to the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930. An e-FIR was lodged on Saturday, following which the cybercrime unit of Delhi Police initiated an investigation.
