SYDNEY, AUG 28: American Lenny Krayzelburg broke the 50 metres backstroke World record in a special time trial. Krayzelburg, who won the 100-200m backstroke double at the meet in World record time, swam a new record of 24.99 seconds to eclipse the previous record of 25.13 seconds.

Krayzelburg smashed the 200m backstroke World record in the final in 1:55.87 to eclipse Spaniard Martin Zubero’s 1991 World record of 1:56.57. On Tuesday, Krayzelburg broke the 100m backstroke World record with a time of 53.60 secs to better compatriot Jeff Rouse’s record of 53.86 sec set at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

It was the 12th World record to fall at the championship after South African Penny Heyns had broken her 50m breaststroke World record in a special time trial after today’s heats. Heyns, racing alone in a special 50-metre breaststroke time trial, set her eighth world record in 11 swims during the championships today.

Officials said Heyns received official sanction from governing body Fina to go for the recordafter breaking three 100m records and four 200m records in the past six weeks, including three previously at this meet.
