CHANDIGARH, May 24: A month-long theatre and dance workshop will be organised at the Pracheen Kala Kendra in Sector 35 from May 28 onwards. Rajesh Rajpal and Manisha Mahajan are the coordinators of the theatre workshop, while Anuradha is coordinating the dance workshop.
The theatre workshop is an effort to bring out new talent and to introduce children to the theatrical and related arts of make up, improvisation, music, dance, craft and design and speech work. The workshop, which has been organised by the Kendra, is the seventh of its kind in as many years. It aims to create an awareness in the children about theatre and its relevance in life as theatre talks about the intricacies of everyday life.
The workshop plays an important role in exploiting the hidden talents of the children and giving them direction as well as an improved outlook and conversational capacities. Says Rajesh, quot;We are not making actors here but giving them an awareness, a basic knowledge. Basically we are working to improve the disposition of theatre and related arts in the city8217;s children. We feel that the city8217;s children have a lot of interest and talent.quot;
In the past six workshops, they have held exhibitions of the things that the children have made during the workshops and have also organised plays. These include Bobby, Paseena-Paseena both Vijay Tendulkar8217;s plays, and The Ungrateful Man from the Panchtantra. Besides these, Surili Ki Shaadi and Sach Honge Sapnay were evolved and put up during the workshops.
The dance workshop too is being held for the seventh time and has about 30-35 students. It focuses on teaching dance forms like Kathak, Manipuri, Bharatnatyam and folk dances.
All the children who participate will perform on stage. A small exhibition displaying craft will also be held. All children who participate are given certificates from the school or institution that has organised the workshop.
