MUMBAI, JAN 9: Willingdon Sports Club took a slender one point lead after Day One of the Grover Viveyards Inter-Club golf tournament at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club here.

After the series of 24 matches over 18 holes between the four participating teams, Willingdon’s tally stood at 16 followed closely by United Services Club with 15 points. BPGC, with 13.5 points, have a lot of work on hand tomorrow if they want to keep the tournament record — of the host club always emerging victorious — intact. Poona Golf Club managed only 10 points after first day’s play.

The match-play event on handicap, which includes both singles and doubles, is fought in the Ryder Cup format with six singles, six foursomes and 12 four balls.

Willingdon won all their singles with Rahul Sood, Vijay Chauhan and Peter Kenyon-Muir netting 6.5 points. A win in each match nets two points with a bonus of half-a-point if the match ends before 18 holes.

The club’s two of the three foursome pairs, sponsor Kapil Grover and FerjanEngineer, and Russi Mehta-Jimmy Billimoria also won. The leader’s four-ball pairs of Rajan Vahi-Riyad Fyzee, Rajkumar Pitamber-Akshay Khilachand brought four points.
