Why should UPA Govt show IAEA full text to Left: Mamata

Trinamool Congress said the Govt could not be faulted for withholding the full-text of India specific safeguard agreement.

.

Trinamool Congress on Thursday said the government could not be faulted for withholding the full-text of India specific safeguard agreement on Indo-US nuclear deal.

8220;Such documents which concerns the country8217;s defence is so secret in nature that it cannot be shared with anybody outside the government,8221; Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee told a press conference in Kolkata.

She was asked whether she felt government had lost its credibility for approaching the IAEA with the safeguards agreements before a trust vote in Parliament.

On External Affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee8217;s earlier statement that government would go to IAEA after it won the trust vote, she said, 8220;There might be a communication gap between the Prime Minister and Pranab Mukherjee.8221;

She said Left parties had no moral right to demand the text as the Left Front government in West Bengal did not make public the agreement signed with the Tatas for the its small car project and also on projects to be set up by Indonesian business house Salim Group.

8220;Nobody knows the terms of agreement entered into by the state government with the Tatas,8221; she said.

She was non-commital on the stand to be taken by her in the event of a trust vote in Parliament saying, 8220;We will take a collective decision in the party.8221;

Banerjee claimed that Left parties had full knowledge of the draft agreement but had kept silent so long 8220;to enjoy the privilege of being crucial supporters of the government from outside.8221;

She said the Leftists were up in arms on the nuclear deal when the Leftist government in West Bengal was out to woo US capital.

8220;When it comes to taking US money, there is no problem for them. The hypocrisy of Left parties is totally exposed8221;, she said.

Banerjee, however, said the government should seek a trust vote.
