The article, 8216;Faraway justice8217; IE, Sept 28 is a thought provoking one. The decline in judicial standards has to be viewed in the light of the general decline in moral standards in society. The article does not highlight adequately the sad state of affairs in the legal profession. The legal fraternity has long lost its professional elan. If the judiciary takes any meaningful steps to reform procedures, bar associations at every level are up in arms. The recent example of the way lawyers in Tamil Nadu agitated and the way political parties and their TV channels focused on the issue is a classical example of this degeneration. There is a good point Kuldip Nayar has made: don8217;t appoint lawyers as law ministers. The same holds true for appointing doctors as heath ministers. The judiciary is the only surviving symbol of our democracy. If it is to flourish and give sustenance to the rule of law, there is need, first of all, for political reform.

8226; Why should there be adjournments sought by lawyers and accepted by judges so frequently? Although timeframes have been fixed under certain laws, the judiciary itself does not adhere to them. Adjournments have occurred to accommodate even the marriage of a lawyer8217;s child! Also, the judiciary invariably concurs with the views of well-known lawyers/solicitors whereas if the same view were to be expressed by a lesser-known lawyer, it would have been rejected outright. Where is justice in all this?

Pawar play

8226; Sharad Pawar8217;s somersault in acknowledging Sonia Gandhi8217;s credentials to be prime minister of India and his heaping praises for her 8220;supreme8221; sacrifice is a classic example of his dynamism. Now let Pawar tell the public why he quit the Congress party and formed the NCP, since the raison d8217;etre for its existence no longer exists.

Condemn it

8226; The attack on the nuns of the Order of Missionaries of Charity, which took place in Calicut, Kerala, as reported in the press today, is an attempt to disturb the communal harmony in the state IE, Sept 27. It needs to be condemned by all in the strongest possible terms. Those responsible for the ugly incident should be apprehended and brought to justice.

Disqualify disrupters

8226; Before the Winter session of Parliament is convened, the president should conduct an emergency meeting of both House of Parliament and warn MPs to behave and conduct themselves with dignity or face disqualification. India can ill-afford a bunch of street ruffians as MPs.

Power of grey

8226; October 1 is earmarked as the International Day of Older persons. The number of elderly persons 8212; that is those who are of 60 years of age or above 8212; worldwide expected to cross 1000 million by 2020 AD. In India, we had the joint family system which was the greatest safeguard. But now with the onset of the nuclear family the concept of family honour and authority have weakened. Similarly, the prestige derived from age and experience has given way to the greater mobility and clout of younger persons.
