West Indies bounced back in style on day two of the third Test against England on Friday, reducing the tourists to 162 for eight at tea, still 62 runs behind.

Fast bowler Fidel Edwards ripped through the England top order with four wickets. England slumped to 90 for five and only Graham Thorpe with an unbeaten 71 prevented West Indies from securing a big first innings lead.

Trailing 2-0 in the four-match series and having lost their last seven wickets for 57 on day one to be all out for 224, Edwards and Tino Best gave West Indies something to shout about.

England resumed on 20 for one and captain Michael Vaughan was lucky not to be out for 12, Ramnaresh Sarwan spilling a simple chance off Best at second slip.

But the 22-year-old Edwards, who missed the second Test because of a side strain, got his first wicket of the day soon after when Mark Butcher edged a rising delivery to Chris Gayle at first slip for five.

New batman Nasser Hussain was subjected to an onslaught from Edwards and Best, the former England captain fortunate to survive when a thick edge went through the vacant slip cordon.

Brief scores: West Indies 224 (R Sarwan 63, S Chanderpaul 50; A Flintoff 5-58, Harmison 3/42) vs England 162-8 (G Thorpe 71no; Edwards 4/48, Tino Best 2/39)
