Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddys son-in-law,evangelist Anil Kumar, has been asked by Chief Electoral Officer I V Subba Rao to explain the presence of Rs 10.40 lakh in cash at a guesthouse in Karimnagar district where Kumar was supposed to meet with three pastors.
On Monday night, the Karimnagar City Police had raided the guesthouse after BJP activists tipped them off. The police recovered the cash kept in bags in the room where the meeting was supposed to take place. Inspector Ganapathi Jadhav said that three pastors were waiting for Anil Kumar to join them. They said the money was meant for religious purposes and to organise a prayer meeting. They denied any connection to the elections, Jadhav said.
Rao told reporters on Wednesday that action may be taken against the three pastors unless they give a satisfactory explanation as to why they had so much cash in their possession.
Following the raid, the TDP also complained to the CEO that Anil Kumar was using his influence as an evangelist to secure votes for the Congress. TDP spokesperson N Rajakumari said that the CMs son-in-law was distributing religious pamphlets called Prayer for elections in which he claims that it was due to the prayers that Congress came to power in 2004.
