Worth the wait

Azim Rizvi chats about his childhood dream of becoming an actor and finally getting the opportunity to showcase his acting skills.

Launch Vehicle

I am so excited to be debuting with Ashfaque Makranis Qasam Se Qasam Se. Its a complete masala entertainer filled with romance, comedy, music and action. I play a college student,Rohan, who is a sweet boy. He falls in love with Faith,a beautiful girl who has just started attending college and the whole college is gaga over her. A sweet story of boy-meets-girl,this film is also high on action and the script is actually based on an all-India youth survey held to find out how the youngsters would behave in various situations.

Casting Coup

I knew that I wanted to be in films since class nine. My father,Nazim Rizvi, who is also the writer of this film wanted me to complete my education before I faced the camera. So I graduated from Mithibai college,Mumbai in the Commerce stream and then I got an MBA degree in Marketing from Rizvi College,Bandra. After that,I went to Delhi to study IAS at Raus IAS academy. I had given my preliminary examination when my father asked me to return and act in the script that he had written which would be produced by Dharmendra Nath Thakur. I was so excited when I received that call because finally,I was getting a chance to realise my long cherished dream.

Stepping Stone

Since my father is a producer,I was brought up on a staple diet of films. As a child,I remember going to the sets of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke starring Salman Khan,Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta. Salmanbhai would play with me on the sets. He has trained me completely. But my father did not want me to use Bollywood connections and start acting in films immediately. I was brought up like any other child,I would be given only 50 rupees to spend per day. I never got cushioned comfort. While in college, for two-three months,I technically assisted this films director Ashfaque,on Veer and Apne where he was the editor. I also went to Korea to learn XMA,Extreme Martial Arts,a sport that combines all forms of martial arts and gymnastics. But I refrained from taking up modelling assignments since I didnt want to expose myself to the public too much. Qasam Se Qasam Se is the perfect debut for me.

First Shot

My first shot was a dance sequence for the song Bolne mein kya jaata hai at Atharva college,Malad. At XMA,I was also learnt b-boying,hiphop and also did gymnastics to hone my dancing skills. So my father wanted me to face the camera for the first time with something which would come easily to me. I had practised the steps in advance with the choreographer Lollipop and I am so happy that I gave all one-take shots on my first day.

Stumbling Block

There are many action sequences in this film but luckily, that was not a challenge for me. I have done all the stunts in this film by myself without using cables. But when I was asked to shout in front of the camera,my throat would really jam up because you have to be really loud. So my co-star Satish Kaushik told me to shout from my stomach. Once I learnt that,it was easier to shoot the scenes where I had to shout.

Lessons Learnt

No amount of education can prepare you for whats in store on the sets. Everyday is a learning process. Being my first film,I learned a lot of technical aspects like lighting and camera movements.
