In the light of Maoist leader Kishenji phoning up state Principal Secretary,Environment,Madan Lal Meena and holding a conversation with him about polluting mines, the West Bengal government has sent instructions to all principal secretaries to guard against such calls.
Meena has been pulled up,though the state government is not contemplating any disciplinary action against him. Saying Meena had not done the right thing,Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said on Tuesday: Anybody can call you,but why should you talk to all of them? It is not acceptable to us. We have told all principal secretaries and other officials not to take such calls.
Kishenji had called up the Principal Secretary at 11.30 pm on December 23,complaining about the pollution being created by sponge iron factories in Lalgarh areas. He asked the Principal Secretary why the government was allowing such factories there and told him that if the government did not do anything, the Maoists would.
Meena not only explained the governments policy
and action plan on these factories but also gave the Naxalite leader names and phone numbers of officials of the Pollution Control Board and asked Kishenji to contact them.
Meena later contacted Home Secretary Sen about the call, who told him to submit a report to Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti. While the Principal Secretary did not say what transpired between him and the Naxalite leader, unware probably that the Home Department taps all phones carried by Kishenji, they got to know of the entire conversation between the two.
Meena has since refused to meet reporters.
