WB collision: Rly official rules out signalling fault

Railway Board chairman Vinay Mittal on Sunday ruled out any fault in the signalling system at Phulia station in Nadia district,where a head-on collision between two local trains left one dead and 67 injured. I have checked the signalling system and the track points. There is no indication of any malfunctioning of these, Mittal told mediapersons after a visit to the accident site.

Neither did I detect any dereliction of duty on the part of the station master in Phulia, he said.

Mittal said gateman Purnendu Kundu,who was the only casualty in the accident,had died while trying to prevent the mishap and the bereaved family would get a compensation of Rs 5 lakh.

Full details of the accident would be known only after the one-man inquiry committee,consisting of Commissioner of Railway Safety R P Yadav,submits its report within 15 to 20 days,Mittal said.

An Eastern Railway press release,quoting Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi,said Rs 50,000 each would be given to six of the injured.

The collision took place on Saturday when the Shantipur-Sealdah local,which was coming from the opposite direction,hit the stationary Sealdah-Shantipur local train in Phulia station.
