Veteran actor joins Cong
GUWAHATI: Nipon Goswami,a veteran Assamese film actor,joined the Congress party in Assam with the ruling party likely to field him against former AGP president Brindaban Goswami in the Tezpur Assembly constituency,when the state goes to the polls in April next year. Goswami was accompanied by two more actors,Indra Bania and Dinesh Das,as Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhubaneswar Kalita welcomed him to the party.
Militants held at Bangla border
GUWAHATI: Three members of the Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam MULTA,an Islamic militant group that has links with fundamentalist organisaions in Bangladesh,were apprehended and handed over to the police by a BSF patrol party in West Garo Hills of Meghalaya Wednesday night. The three militants,Indians by nationality,were apprehended when they were trying to get into India from Bangladesh through West Garo Hills.
Ship crewman from India shot
PHILIPSBURG: Police in St Maarten say a cruise ship crew member from India has been shot in an attempted robbery. Police spokesman Ricardo Henson says the victim,Gahadhar Pradhan,was from India and works on board the Aurora. Pradhan told reporters that he was walking when an armed man approached him and demanded money from him.
Lucknow Univ to pay fine to student
LUCKNOW: The State Information Commission has slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 on Lucknow University for not awarding medal to a meritorious student as the convocation was not held. The order was passed on Wednesday after the student,Alka Bhargava,who had topped M Sc in 1994,alleged that she was not given the gold medal by the officials.
