Responding to a recent US Embassy advisory reminding all American citizens living in or travelling to India about the high threat from terrorism, the Government on Thursday reiterated that the country is a safe place.

Stating that India is one of the safest countries and that the Government would ask the US to withdraw the travel advisory,Home Minister P Chidambaram said: India is a safe place it is safer than any other country in the world. Thousands of tourists come to India and we look forward to welcoming them.

The advisory, posted on the US Embassy website on June 2,stated: The United States Mission in India wishes to urgently remind all US citizens resident in or travelling to India that there is a high threat from terrorism throughout India. As terror attacks are a serious and growing threat,US citizens are urged to always practice good security, including maintaining a heightened situational awareness and a low profile.

Meanwhile, the US Charge dAffairs,Peter Burleigh, was learnt to have conveyed to New Delhi on Thursday that the advisory was just cautionary and not a warning against travelling to India.
