Timothy J Roemer, the US ambassador to India, has said that Hafiz Saeed must be prosecuted and the infrastructure of his terrorist outfit,Lashkar-e-Toiba,should be dismantled as they are a regional threat, and the six persons in Islamabad who are caught should be given adequately lengthy sentences.

Roemer,in an interview to The Indian Express Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta for NDTV 24X7s Walk the Talk programme, said,US is very clear that six people who are caught and trial is going to begin against them in early October in Islamabad should be given adequately lengthy sentences. Two,Hafiz Saeed should be prosecuted and, three, infrastructure of Lashkar-e-Toiba should be dismantled. They are a regional threat, not just a threat to India.

On Saeed,Roemer said,Reading through some of the dossiers which India has given to Pakistan,I certainly think theres a lot of proof that UN has on Hafiz Saeed under Resolution 1267,and Interpol has put out a red corner notice8230; theres plenty of evidence out there, they need to put it together and prosecute.

The US envoy said that he was hopeful about the outcome. Asked if US and India had shared any such actionable intelligence which might have already prevented anything post-26/11,Roemer said,Very likely. He emphasised sharing knowledge in terms of forensic science,DNA printing, training, etc.
