US approach to terror fight flawed: CPM

A day after the killing of Osama bin Laden, the CPM put the blame for rise in terrorism at the doorstep of the US

A day after the killing of Osama bin Laden, the CPM on Tuesday put the blame for rise in terrorism at the doorstep of the US. It said unless Washington mended its way and put an end to its approach of resorting to military force and state terrorism, the problem cannot be tackled.

For the CPM,anti-Americanism has been its calling card and significantly also a way to reach out to the Muslim masses. In the midst of a do-or-die electoral battle, the CPM pointed out that the killing of Osama does not mean an end to the problem of terrorism and will not result in an end to the extremist violence spawned by fundamentalism as the scourge has many dimensions.

At the same time, the methods used by the United States to fight the so-called global war on terror has only worsened the situation. In the name of fighting the al Qaeda, the US devastated Afghanistan and Iraq. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives in these wars of aggression, the CPM Politburo said.

The recent military intervention in Libya and the continuing war in Afghanistan show that the US has learnt no lessons from the past. State terrorism and fundamentalist terrorism feed each other. Unless the US changes its approach of resorting to military force and state terrorism, the problem of terrorism cannot be tackled successfully, it said.
