Three students, including a TV dance reality show participant, have committed suicide in the city by hanging themselves in the past 48 hours in three separate incidents, the police said on Monday.
A class VII student from the Shardashram High School in Dadar hanged himself in the schools bathroom on Monday, allegedly because he had failed in four subjects in the mid-semester exam. Incidentally, the victim Sushant Patil 12 had watched the movie 3 Idiots for the second time on Sunday night for which he was reportedly reprimanded by his father.
Shardashram School is well known as it is the alma mater of cricketing stars like Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli.
Like every morning,Sushant had arrived in the school around 7 am and after keeping his bag in his classroom, went to a toilet-cum-bathroom. When he didnt return to the classroom even after the first period, the teacher sent some students to look for him and they found the bathroom bolted from inside, said ACP M Sankhe of the Dadar division. Sushants body was found hanging when the bathroom was broke open.
His father told us that his son had never been good at studies but never seemed really bothered by his low grades. He was not very good at studies and like any other father he would also scold him over his marks, but the boy had never taken him that seriously, said a police official from the Dadar police station.
The school staff told the media that the suicide was not related to his marks. The school had reopened on Saturday and he was normal then. We usually counsel students who fail their exams but such incidents are isolated and are a result of individual decisions and its difficult to have any preventive measures for the same, trustee of the school Srinivas Nerulkar said.
In another incident,a student of DY Patil College in Nerul allegedly committed suicide at her residence at Powai on Saturday night. She was reported to be depressed over her poor performance in the second semester of the physiotherapy course.
The police said Bhajan Preet Bhuller,18,had failed in three out of six subjects in her second semester and that might have driven her to commit suicide. Senior Inspector Ashok Jadhav of Powai police station said,On January 3,we received information about a suicide in Chetan Nagar area of Powai. When our officials reached the place,we found Bhullers body hanging from the ceiling of her study on the first floor of her residence. We recorded statements of her father,Bhupendra Singh, who runs an engineering workshop, her elder sister Inderjit Kaur and brother Karamjit Singh.
In yet another case, body of 11-year-old Neha Sawant, who participated in a reality TV show two years ago,was found hanging at her Dombivali house on Saturday morning.
Neighbours and friends of the family on Monday said her parents were disturbed by reports that Neha took the extreme step after being denied permission to participate in a reality dance show. He father Narendra Sawant said Neha was part of a group-dance contest around two years ago but had not been connected to any reality shows after that.
No suicide note has been found in any of the three cases.
