The gritty streets of Lowell await for a champion who would restore their hurt pride. Their earlier champion Dicky left his boxing days behind him and took to drugs after losing a fight with the world champion Sugar Ray Leonard.
Thats when Dickys younger brother Mickey decides to follow his brothers footsteps and takes up boxing. His mom Alice serves as his manager and Dicky decides to train Mickey. But things go awry for the family when Mickeys girlfriend,Charlene, convinces him to move away from his family and pursue his dreams without their interference.
Left on his own,Mickey earns a shot at the World Championship only to be confronted by his brother and his dysfunctional family. Will he reconcile with his past or will he continue on his own terms?
Director David O. Russell says: One of the few things that made this film so beautiful for me,was when Mark Wahlberg told me that he was willing to do almost anything for it! Marks willingness to fight in the ring and go that extra mile during the shoots lent great value to the film.
