With the Bharatiya Janata Partys youth wing adamant on hoisting the Tricolour at Srinagars Lal Chowk on January 26,the Omar Abdullah government on Sunday sealed the states borders with neighbouring Punjab it has put up barricades and deployed multi-tearshell launcher vehicles and water canons at all its entry points and turned down a request of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha BJYM to hold a rally in Jammu on January 25.
We cannot ensure protection to such a large crowd on the Republic Day eve, said a senior official, explaining the reason for rejecting the BJYM request.
On Saturday, the police held nearly 200 BJYM activists soon after they alighted from a train at Jammu railway station. As they claimed to be pilgrims, they were taken to Katra in four vehicles.
Seven-eight companies of Central Reserve Police Force have been deployed in addition to contingents of state police personnel at Lakhanpur and various other entry points bordering Punjab.
Sources said the idea was to disperse the BJYM activists right at the states border with Punjab,as the civil administration, police and paramilitary forces were already under tremendous pressure to ensure that the Republic Day passed off peacefully in view of militants attempts to create disturbance.
Lets hope everything passes off peacefully, said Kathuas Deputy Commissioner Zahida Khan, adding that they are also our own people. We hope they will listen to us and understand the situation in the state.
However,BJPs national secretary and co-incharge of BJYM Vani Tripathi said those trying to stop us will stop, but we will move ahead. We are here to assert our constitutional right of hoisting tricolour in any part of the country, she added.
