The government has invited senior leaders of the Congress and BJP and top officials to the luncheon meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will host for visiting Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday. Before the lunch,Singh and Zardari will have a one-to-one meeting without note-takers,according to sources.
The sources said External Affairs Minister S M Krishna,Home Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony are expected to attend the luncheon meeting. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee,who has engagements in Karnataka on Sunday,has not yet confirmed his plans.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal,who is the minister-in-waiting for the visiting leader,will also be part of the meeting,along with National Security Advisor Shivshanker Menon and Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai.
Since Zardaris son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is also coming,Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi,along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi,will also be attending the lunch. Ties between the Bhuttos and the Gandhi family go back a long way,from the time of Indira Gandhi and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto,and then Rajiv Gandhi and Benazir Bhutto.
From the Opposition,senior BJP leader L K Advani and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj will be attending PMs lunch with Zardari. The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley was also invited but he will not be able to make it since he is out of Delhi.
Meanwhile,the BJP on Saturday said that if India-Pakistan relations are discussed,Pakistan must be told in clear terms that support to terrorism from its soil must end.
In Islamabad,Zardaris spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said,President Asif Ali Zardari will leave for Ajmer Sharif on Sunday for prayers at the shrine and will return the same day. He will be presented with a sword by the Ajmer Sharif management committee,sources said.
He said Zardaris delegation will consist of Bilawal,who is also the Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party,Interior Minister Rehman Malik,Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani and the Presidents personal and security staff.
Sources said Jilani,who was expelled as Pakistan deputy high commissioner in 2003 for funnelling funds to Kashmiri separatists,will be coming as the Pakistans Foreign Secretary. He had come to India earlier as part of an official delegation for the talks.
Zardari will be the first Pakistani head of state to visit India in seven years after Pervez Musharrafs official visit to India in 2005.
Goshtaba,dosa on Zardaris menu
The goshtaba will be among a spread of delicacies from various parts of India awaiting Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari at the lunch with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The cuisine has been selected with an aim to bring together specialities of all regions. From Kashmir,the menu will have goshtaba meatballs in curd-based curry which is the mainstay of Wazwan.
Dosa and avial mixed vegetables is the selection from the South along with prawns. As starters,there will be burra kabab from the central heartland of the country. The desserts will include phirni from the north and sandesh,a Bengali delicacy.
