Sohrabuddin case: No attack, cops say Khan shot himself

Police officials said Khans friend, who was with him, told the police that Khan had fabricated the story.

The Udaipur Police now believe Azam Khan,a key witness in the Sohrabuddin encounter case, who claimed to have been attacked on Tuesday by masked gunmen on motorcycles, may have shot himself in the shoulder.

Senior police officials said Khans friend Iqbal, who was with him, told the police that Khan had fabricated the story about an attempt on his life. Both Khan and Iqbal were questioned all through Wednesday evening, and Khan was let off only late at night.

Khan and Iqbals statements about the incident did not corroborate. On Wednesday,Iqbal told us the whole thing was fabricated and that Khan had shot himself, a senior Udaipur police official said.

Police had the first suspicions when none of those present near the spot where the alleged shootout took place seemed to have seen the episode.

Khan told reporters on Wednesday that he was not safe in Rajasthan and would shortly shift to Ahmedabad or Mumbai.
