Sleeping beauty

Parliamentarians are known to snatch a wink or two inside the house, mostly after lunch hour. But on Friday,RJD chief Lalu Prasad seemed to have overdone it when he was caught taking a nap almost immediately after the house assembled at 11 am for question hour. Sitting on the front row,the RJD chief almost went into deep slumber, forcing Speaker Meira Kumar to wake him up. Unko uthaiye Please wake him up she told a fellow MP who was sitting behind Lalu. As Lalu woke up after being poked on his shoulder, the fellow MP sheepishly said he was doing so at the behest of the Speaker.

Whos Messi?

Messi fever may have gripped Bengal and Bengalis, but one eminent native from that part of the country has remained untouched. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, whose interest lies in history and politics, and in books dealing with these subjects, was clueless about all the fuss in Kolkata and elsewhere. He was heard asking reporters what time the match was and which were the teams playing. And while most of the Bengal MPs have made their way to Kolkata to watch the match,Mukherjee has deliberately booked himself on a late evening flight for a scheduled visit to Kolkata to ensure that he reaches there well after the match was over and the crowds had returned home

Parting Wisdom

Justice H S Bedi, delivering his farewell speech at the Supreme Court lawns, said he had always followed three golden rules a well-mannered judge should follow in court do not throw the litigants file in anger, never ask the lawyer his name in court, and never address the counsel as Mr Counsel. He said these principles were shaped while appearing as Deputy Advocate General before some of the nastiest judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the eighties. But nearly three decades later,he considers those experiences as his good fortune. The reason: It brought home to me the message and the lesson as to what I should do if ever I was to become a judge.

Political Name Dropping

The FIR registered by the Enforcement Directorate for money laundering in the various cases being investigated against Jaganmohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh curiously does not name either Jagan or his father, former chief minister Y S Rajashekhar Reddy. The FIR,registered under various sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act,only names B P Acharya,Principal Secretary Home in the state government, and the Emaar-MGF Group. The decision to leave out the names of Jagan and YSR seems to have been prompted by the huge uproar in the state following the FIRs filed by CBI which had named both the father and the son. The CBIs FIRs deals with cases of corruption and some sections of the IPC.
