Sensex ends above 20k for 20th time

Sensex rose past 20,000 pts early on Tuesday boosted by robust foreign portfolio investment.

As cricketers slug it out at the Champions League T20 tournament,financial market investors put together their own Twenty-20 championship of sorts helping the Sensex past 20,000 points for the 20th time.

The first time Sensex closed above 20,000 level was on December 11,2007 and the last before today was on January 15,2008.

Before January 15,2008,Sensex had closed above this mark in 19 trading sessions,making today’s closing the 20th time.

The Sensex settled 95.45 points higher at 20,001.55 points on Tuesday — just a shade above the psychological mark. In intra-day trade,Sensex had risen to 20,088.96 points.

Tuesday’s intra-day peak is the highest for the Sensex since January 17,2008,while the closing level is highest since January 15 that year when the index had settled at 20,251.09 points. That was also the last time it settled above 20,000 level.

Sensex had for the first time closed above 20,000 level on December 11,2007 when it settled at 20,290.89 points.

Starting that day,it settled over 20,000-point milestone for four consecutive trading sessions till December 14,2007.

After slipping below this level for some days,the Sensex again closed over 20,000 level for three consecutive days from December 26,2007. After a gap of one day,the Sensex again returned to close over 20,000 level on December 31,2007 and this trend continued for 12 straight trading sessions till January 15,2008.

Today’s feat comes after a gap of 32 months.
