Hockey star to appear in film
After shining as a star on the turf,India’s hockey sensation Dilip Tirkey is all set to appear on the silver screen in a new innings. The suave and soft-spoken former Indian hockey captain has agreed to make his acting debut in an Oriya film Toro Moro Katha Heba Chup Chap (You and me will talk silently),likely to be released during Dusshera this year.
The 33-year-old tribal talent from Orissa’s Sundargarh district represented the country in three Olympics, but is not very confident of acting. “Acting is totally new for me. This is altogether a different experience. However, the director of the film has given me enough confidence,” Dilip, who recently announced his retirement from international hockey, said.
Film director R N Mohanty, who had been watching Dilip since a long time said,“The hockey players had elements of acting. Those talents need to be explored.” Dilip plays the role of an elder brother who sacrifices everything to help make a tea- shop owner become chief minister of the state. “Dilip will sacrifice everything to make this stranger boy the chief minister,” Susant Das,the script writer, said. In the two-and-half hour film,Dilip would appear seven times.
Though the tribal icon had the experience of facing the camera for advertisements, this would be for the first time that Dilip had to be seen on big screen,he said.
Dilip, who has been staying in the state capital, has another Oriya film in pipeline. Kotia Swapna (One crore dream),a film based on hockey.

Distributors wants top actors to take a cut in pay-packets
The General Council of Madurai-Ramanathapuram district Cinema Distributors’ Association recently said that out of 122 Tamil films released last year,90 films were on show in the theatres only for a week.
Even the films of the “so-called famous stars’’ could not be run for more than four weeks, leading to distributors suffering loss to the tune of several crore, the Council,a powerful body of distributors in Tamil Nadu, said in a resolution passed at its meeting in Madurai. Attributing the main reason for the high cost of production of films to the “salaries of famous film stars”,the Association urged leading stars to voluntarily reduce their salary if they wanted the film Industry to survive. Salaries for directors and technical personnel had also increased manifold. “If this trend continued, all the theatres may have to be closed down,” the resolution said.
The Association requested Tamil Nadu film artistes to emulate their counterparts in Kerala and take a pay-cut for the industry’s survival. It also welcomed the Film Industry Welfare Board set up by the Tamil Nadu government for the welfare of all those connected with the industry including distributors.
