Director Vipul Shah watched cricket matches of the 70s to observe the behaviour and look of the cricket fans for Action Replayy.
Making a film set in different time zone is not easy and who would know it better than director Vipul Shah whose Action Replayy is partly set in the 70s? The film, based on his play Action Replay that was a huge success in the early 90s,will have Akshay Kumar,Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,Neha Dhupia and others attired in flared bell- bottoms,poker-straight long hair,over-sized goggles and accessories of the 70s.
Eight months went into the pre-production whereas I would go with my cast and crew to watch films of the 8217;70s to get a good look at their costumes,make-up,hair and behaviour. Not only that,we would also watch the cricket matches of that era keeping our eyes glued to what the viewers seated in the box were wearing and how they behaved etc, revealed Shah, adding that the idea to make a film set in a different era came after he read the book Time Machine.
Designers Manish Malhotra worked on Aishwarya8217;s look,Shabina Khan on Akshay8217;s and there were several other designers for the junior artistes. Shah placed the order for 300 retro wigs and 3000 dresses not only for the main cast of Akshay,Aishwarya and Neha but also for all the junior artistes.
There were 20 make-up men,20 hair -dressers and 30 dress-men,and all in all a crew of about 600 on the sets all the time! said Shah.
The film, which will also have Aishwarya and Akshay playing elderly people briefly, also roped in Paul Pattison, the Oscar winning make-up person from Australia,to work on their looks. Action Replayy releases on November 5.
