Raid order: Nityananda moves HC against CM

Self-styled godman Nityananda, who was released on bail in a case related to an assault on a media representative

Self-styled godman Nityananda, who was on Thursday released on bail in a case related to an assault on a media representative, has now filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court against Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda claiming Rs 10 crore in damages for illegally ordering a search of his ashram in the wake of the assault complaint on June 8.

Nityananda was re-arrested few hours after being released on charges of disturbing peace and sent to a days judicial custody.

The self-styled godmans petition pending admission in the High Court names district officials of Ramanagaram where the ashram is located, the Suvarna 24215;7 news channel and the state police as respondents, apart from Gowda.

In the plea,Nityananda has argued that the Chief Minister did not have any legal authority to order a search of the premises since such a step could be ordered only by a court on the request of the police and with respect to a specific case that is registered.

Gowda ordered the search after a meeting with senior police officials over a media campaign against alleged illegal activities at the ashram. Nityananda has claimed in his petition that the CM ordered search and seizure under pressure from anti-social elements and has also sought orders for extricating the ashram from government control.
