The top-level appointment to the Railway Board took another twist on Monday,as the acting chairman got extension for a month or till further orders whichever is earlier on the last day of his three-month tenure, even as the formal appointment of a new chairman is expected this week.
It is learnt that South Western Railway GM A K Mittal and Chittaranjan Loco Works GM Radhey Shyam are leading the race.
Sources said the Appointments Committee is ready to approve the name of the new chairman and the return of PM Manmohan Singh from his tour will be awaited if approval by fax does not come before that.
V K Gupta,GM of Northern Railway and Arunendra Kumar,Acting Chairman Railway Board, are also in the fray.
Radhe Shyam had staked claim even though he is formally not the GM of a zonal railway (a must to become Chairman) but his candidature was processed on the plea that he has been looking after the charge of GM,Kolkata Metro. If Mittal is made chairman,he would be the first from the Railway Stores Service to get the post.
