The general manager of a private logistics company was attacked while on way to office in Pune on Tuesday morning, allegedly by members of a workers union. Two people have been arrested.
Vincent Gilbert,50,who has been admitted to a hospital, has told the police he suspects the attackers were members of the Maharashtra State Mathadi Kamgar Union.
Gilbert is the general manager of Chetak Logistics Company at Kuruli in Khed taluka. He said Pradeep Pawar, the Pune district president of the Union, had been threatening him for some time.
Pawar and his men say my company has been hiring labourers who are not registered with the government. I had informed them that all our workers are registered. On Sunday, some members of Pawars union approached me with a letter on the same issue. One of them was among the four who attacked me, said Gilbert.
He added that he had even filed a complaint with the Chakan police and the labour commissionerate against Pawar in March this year.
He said around 8.30 am on Tuesday, the four assailants chased his car, broke the windowpane, and shot at his windscreen. They then attacked him with sharp weapons, injuring his hand.
Police claim to have seized one of the two motorcycles used by the assailants from the two persons arrested in connection with the attack,Mahesh Shivaji Shinde and Bacchan Badal Pande.
