Probe ordered into 8216;informer8217; death in Sukma

The Raipur Police Headquarters has ordered a probe into the death of a police informer

The Raipur Police Headquarters has ordered a probe into the death of a police informer, suspected to be a surrendered Maoist, while defusing a landmine in Sukma district Saturday.

Kawasi Hunga was part of a police team that had gone to defuse the bomb in Gorgonda area. The incident took place around 11.30 am. While Hunga died on the spot, jawans Anil Tandan and Punem Sanna were injured.

Though Sukma SP Abhishek Shandilya claimed that Hunga was just a police informer, sources said he was a former Maoist who had surrendered sometime before but that police had not shown his arrest so far. Instead, police continued to use him in operations and it was at his specific information that the police party had gone to Gorgonda for defusing the landmine.

Bastar IG AD Gautam refused to comment on why police took Hunga for such operations. The local superintendent of police would know the exact situation, he said.

The incident has reignited a controversy over the use of non-policemen for anti-Naxal operations. CPI leader Manish Kunjam has asked police to explain the circumstances under which Hunga was made a part of the police team.
