Going beyond monetary benefits,city youngsters are looking for part time jobs that reflect their interests in life.

Twenty-three-year old architecture student Nidhi Parekh loves the vibes of old structures. For her,this is a way to connect to the past and help design better urban scapes for the future. So,when she had some spare time in hand,she decided to volunteer for the Indian National Trust for Art Craft and Heritage. With a camera and a notepad in hand,she would document the old structures that figured on the list of conserved structures in the city. For a lot of youngsters like Parekh,part time jobs are a way of following one8217;s passion and figuring out whether their chosen fields makes sense to them. The volunteer activity gives me a lot of scope to learn and study. It8217;s like a field work of what I study in the course.

A similar opportunity keeps 25-year-old Abhishek Kanjilal motivated. Every day after college,Kanjilal works as a store manager at Hysteria the rock and roll merchandise store on North Main Road,Koregaon Park. Kanjilal,who is studying design at Symbiosis Institute of Design,considers the job as a great personal learning exercise and monetary relief. The primary motive was to earn money and sponsor my own education,which I am able to do. But why this work really is great for me is the kind of opportunities it provides. Apart from working for the store,I am trying to design merchandise for them. Being a product designing student,this opportunity will really help.

For these youngsters,it not just the income that is the inspiring factor. What counts is the experience,the networking and the opportunity, says Parekh,Money just makes it all the more easier, she adds.

The city too is gearing for this change. Several opportunities for the young and the driven have been emerging. At the Dinkar Kelkar Museum,an audio guide is being conceptualised. We would love to get students to work for this, says Sudhnava Ranade,director,Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum. So right from the script,to the voice over and even research for it,we are ready to get help from students. Either Or in Sohrab Hall is also looking out for a part-time model for their fashion pictures.
