Northwest and Northeast parts of the country continued to be heavily rain-deficient even as the overall rainfall situation improved significantly in the last two weeks,shows the latest data released by Indian Meteorological Department.

The Northwest region,comprising Himachal Pradesh,Punjab,Haryana,Delhi,northwest Uttar Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan,has received a cumulative rainfall of 140.1 mm in the period from June 1 to July 23,which was 37 per cent less than normal,IMD said. The deficiency in the northeastern region was to the tune of 42 per cent. The region has received a total of 391.4 mm of rain this season.

Central India has been the only region which has received more than normal rainfall till now. In the week between July 16 and 22,the region received 79 per cent excess rainfall. So far,Central India has got 435.1 mm of rainfall which is six per cent more than normal.

The Met office predicted that the Northeast states and the foothills of Himalayas were likely to see a significant increase in the rainfall activity after two days.

It warned that heavy rainfall was expected in a few places in Gujarat over the next two days after which the rainfall activity will subside.

Scattered rainfall was expected over northwest India as well while central and peninsular India were likely to see subdued monsoon activity.
