Old wine,new bottle

Murli Sharma, after years of playing character roles,is now looking forward to his first lead role in the Marathi film Eka Shabdat Sangto even as Telugu and Hindi films keep him busy.

Post-Singham,Murli Sharma is on a high. Like the film,he too has been getting rave reviews for his character of DSP Satyam Patkar,a corrupt cop. “I am thrilled with all the sms-es and phone calls that I have been receiving since the movie’s release. I am very happy to be a part of Rohit Shetty’s films. And I wonder what I have done to be in his unit. I always tell him that I am willing to even work as a junior artiste in his film. I am very happy for Rohit-sir and Ajay (Devgn) bhai,” smiles the actor, who is presently in Hyderabad shooting for the Telugu film Oosarvelli, which means chame-leon. In the movie,he explains, the hero played by Junior NTR changes his ‘colour’ according to circumstances, hence the title. Murli plays a guest appearance in the film directed by Surender Reddy, whose Atithi, bagged Murli his first Nandi award. “I did this film for Suri who I refer to as tamma (younger brother) and he calls me anna (older brother),” he smiles.

In Mr Nokia,Murli is playing a villain,a paan-chewing Hyderabadi Muslim named Shahjahan Bismillah, who loves singing Hindi songs,“during the most tense moments,” he states. The film, directed by Anil Krishna, has Manoj, the second son of Telugu actor Mohan Babu as hero.

Ramachari Veedu Pedda Godachari is another Telugu film where Murli is playing the main villain. “It is fun to beat up guys, rape girls and then get paid for doing all that,” he laughs, adding,“But the last 10 days of the shoot, mainly the climax scenes,is what I always dread when the villain is beaten black, blue and even orange, mainly in Telugu films. Yet being the bad guy is super fun.”

Now the actor is looking forward to playing a rich suave businessman in the Gajendra Ahire-directed Marathi-Hindi bilingual titled Eka Shabdat Sangto/ Just 47. “This is my first film in Marathi. It has three main lead characters played by Kiran Karmarkar,Pratap Fhad and me. All three belong to different stratas of the society and I play someone from the upper class. The film is a journey of this man,who has everything,a beautiful wife, many factories,et al,but he finally reaches a stage where he leaves everything behind and goes off in search of ‘life and peace’. This was very disturbing because many a times I would think, what if this actually happens to me someday?” he ponders.

The film, which releases on August 5,was shot simultaneously in Marathi and Hindi. Talking about working with an efficient director like Ahire, the actor says,“He is a very nice guy. He is very focussed, clear and helpful on the sets.”

Of his Hindi films,Murli has Ajay Chandok’s Chatur Singh Two Star with Sanjay Dutt. There is Shamin Desai’s Raftaar. In Manish Manekpuri’s Alaap,he plays Gopalkrishna Reddy,a Naxalite,Lakshman Rekha, which is directed by music composer Anand Raaj Anand and stars Vinay Pathak and Mona Singh.

“In the last two years,I have been working round the clock and have had 14 films to my credit. I am trying to make the most of this opportunity and have enjoyed it immensely,” says the actor as he awaits Eka Shabdat Sangto wherein he plays his first lead role.
