With their futures secured by the 8216;mere8217; dint of bagging admission into a top Indian B-school,some IIM-Ahmedabad students are turning into caped crusaders.
OK,the part about 8216;caped8217; is exaggerated,but they are certainly serious about making this avowedly 8216;honest8217; country practice what it preaches.
An honest day8217;s work,creating good money from the sweat of their brows,is what these IIM-Ahmedabad students crave,but what riles them is the fact that innumerable people in the highest echelons of power,politicians,bureaucrats and businessmen,conspire to generate black money through corrupt deals,which in turn deprives millions of honest Indian citizens of what is rightfully theirs.
While the likes of Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata chief of Rs 320,000 crore salt-to-software group and others corporate wizards may spout inanities about corruption depriving them of business opportunities,these students,with a total turnover assumption: broke of a few quid,presumably borrowed,have actually started working on creating a system that would nip such evil eventualities right in the bud.
When the country is rocked by numerous scams,Indian Institute of Management,Ahmedabad students here have decided to launch a helpline on corruption to curb the menace plaguing the country.
A group of six IIM-A students proposed the idea to start a helpline on corruption to former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and IIM-A professor Anil Gupta,which was appreciated by them.
8220;When the students proposed the idea of staring a corruption helpline,I thought that the idea was excellent in present context when situation in the country is such that common people think that their work cannot be done without giving bribe,8221; Gupta said.
The country was recently rocked by 2G spectrum scam,Common Wealth Games scam and Adarsh society scam which has brought the issue of corruption in focus.
8220;At present people do not know where to complain against the corrupt officials and some of them even fear that if they complain their genuine work will never be done. It is a very complex issue,8221; Gupta said.
8220;Groups of six students have started the ground work to start the helpline. They have conducted a small survey on corruption issue. They have also visited,various state agencies like Anti-Corruption Bureau,Regional Transport Office and other state government agencies like police,8221; he added.
8220;The helpline envisages to help those who just need counselling regarding their rights at various levels,8221; Gupta said.
8220;Plan is also to forward the complaints of corruption received by the helpline to concerned agencies. However,for this thing we require the support of all the law enforcing agencies. Talks are on with them and we will see how it works out,8221; Gupta said.
8220;We also have to look into complaints coming to us,
scrutinise it and sort out whether they are real or fabricated
ones,so that upright government officer are not harassed due
to this initiative,8221; he added.
Ravi Yadav,who is a part of the project,said,8221;In
our proposed model,the complaints received shall be
pre-screened by retired officials,before being fed into the
our on-line complaint data base.8221;
8220;We are looking to integrate our corruption helpline
with an agency like ACB so that database generated through
this model helps create social pressures on departments from
where complaints are being reported,8221; Yadav said.
Apart from Yadav,five other students who have taken
up the project are Udit Goyal,Saurabh Singh,Nikhil Bhaskar,
Shantanu Sekhar and Daniel De Luna,an exchange student from
Italy.
Professor Gupta said,8221;I think this is a first step in
the right direction. It will build pressure on corrupt
officials and also inspire people to come forward against the
menace.8221;
