With two days to go for the counting of votes of the Assembly elections in Maharashtra,a tussle between the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party NCP for the top post seems to be in the offing, with the NCP indicating that it is keen on staking its claim on the chief ministership.
Senior NCP leaders on Tuesday indicated that they would like to follow the Jammu and Kashmir formula where the Congress and National Conference NC have agreed to share the chief ministership for two-and-a-half years each.
During a decade-long alliance in Maharashtra, the chief ministership has remained with the Congress while the NCP has retained the posts of deputy chief minister and Home minister among other important portfolios in the state government. The sharing of chief ministership,if it happens, will be the first in the state between the alliance partners.
NCP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Chaggan Bhujbal said his party had capable leaders who could perform as the states chief minister and that the Congress should take lead in discussing a sharing of the post formula.
As most exit polls are indicating a return of the Congress-NCP combine, moves are being made in the Congress for the selection of chief minister of the state.
In case the Congress-NCP government is voted back to power, the Congress and NCP should share the chief ministers post for two-and-a-half years each, Bhujbal said.
There are reports that Congress leaders are camping in New Delhi to lobby for the chief ministers post with the party high command.
