In a warning of sorts to the Madhya Pradesh government,Left-wing extremists shot dead a police constable and injured another in the Timkitola jungles in Balaghat on Wednesday,the first casualties in the state since 2004.
Ten members of the Hawk Force were on their way to Sitapala Chowky from Risawada when they were ambushed by the Naxals,believed to be members of a 15-20-strong Tanda Dalam,active on the borders of MP,Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.
Harish Chandra Rahangale,28,was riding pillion on a two-wheeler driven by Kamlesh Bahe. They were followed by another two-wheeler and a jeep when the extremists fired at them at a turn on the hilly terrain.
Armed with AK-47s and SLRs,the Naxals fired a volley of bullets on the first two-wheeler but were taken aback when the other cops returned fire,DIG Balaghat Range Ravi Kumar Gupta said.
Rahangdale took three bullets one of them in the head proved fatal,while 27-year-old Kamlesh was hit by two bullets. Balaghat is the only district in the state recognised by the Centre as Naxal-affected.
