MP to pay for senior citizen pilgrimage

The government on Tuesday announced its Mukhyamantri Teertha-Darshan Yojana under which it will send people aged 60 years and above and belonging to all religions,if they are domicile of the state and dont pay income tax,to pilgrimage every year.

Velankanni Church in Tamil Nadu and Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan are among the 16 other destinations identified under the scheme. The rest include famous Hindu,Sikh,Jain and Buddhist pilgrim centres like Badrinath,Kedarnath,Haridwar,Vaishnodevi,Amritsar,Gaya and Sammed Shikhar.

At its first meeting held in Bhopal,the state-level committee headed by Religious Affairs Minister Lakshmikant Sharma decided to launch the scheme in the first week of August from Rameshwaram.

The first batch of 950 pilgrims will be selected from Bhopal and Hoshangabad divisions and those willing to undertake the pilgrimage have to apply before July 20. Registration for other places will begin only after that.

The scheme promises to help at least 60,000 senior citizens make an annual pilgrimage. Those aged 65 and above will be entitled to take an attendant along.
