Its crackdown on sugar hoarders having been praised by political rivals like Sonia Gandhi and Prakash Karat, the BJP government has set about placating the traders. After the deadline to seek licenses was over, the government has seized close to 5,000 tonne sugar in the last two weeks striking a fear among traders who were sitting on stocks in the hope of making a quick buck in future. Now,Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has suggested that five traders or their representatives from each division be called to the state capital on September 2 to hear their grievances,if any. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Paras Jain has been asked to convince the traders into accepting the governments side of the drive and what led it to strictly enforce the provisions of the Sugar Control order.

We want to explain to them why the government chose to intervene, Commissioner,Food and Civil Supplies,Ajit Kesari told The Indian Express. Once the traders know the nuances of the order, there will be no scope for consumers exploitation,or for punitive action against the traders, the government said.
