Officials further noted that proactive and focused policing measures have led to a significant reduction in snatching incidents.
The Chandigarh Police has reported a slight decline in heinous crimes in 2025, with cases reducing from 418 last year to 412 this year, marking a decrease of six cases, or approximately 1.4 per cent. Heinous crimes include murder, attempt to murder, culpable homicide, kidnapping and abduction, rape, dacoity, robbery, and extortion. The police highlighted that about 88.6 per cent of these cases have been worked out during the year, reflecting effective investigation, timely follow-up, and focused action against offenders.
“The reduction in incidences of heinous crime along with a high worked-out percentage underscores the strong preventive measures, targeted operations against habitual criminals, and committed investigative efforts of Chandigarh Police to ensure public safety and maintain law and order in the Union Territory,” the UT Police said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Officials further noted that proactive and focused policing measures have led to a significant reduction in snatching incidents. These measures included regular surveillance of previous offenders, conducting cordon and search operations (CASO), deployment of nakas, strengthening of area patrolling, and increased police presence at vulnerable points. As a result, snatching cases declined from 131 in 2024 to 100 in 2025, a reduction of 31 cases, amounting to an approximate 24 per cent decline. The police stated that this improvement highlights the effectiveness of preventive policing and continuous field-level monitoring.
The force also intensified enforcement under Special Local Laws, focusing on the Arms Act, Excise Act, NDPS Act, Gambling Act, and Public Drinking to strengthen crime prevention and maintain public order in the UT. To improve civic discipline and curb disorderly conduct, action against public drinking and creating nuisance was strengthened. Such cases rose sharply from 102 in 2024 to 200 in 2025, marking an increase of 98 cases, or around 96.1 per cent. In addition, around 220 persons were booked under Section 68(1)(B) of the Punjab Police Act for consuming liquor at public places.
