The rugged and manly look is back as a style statement.
For legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin, the moustache said it all; it was his signature statement. Back home too the moustache has a loyal list of followers. Be it Salman Khan with his new look as Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg or Emraan Hashmi in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai sporting his don-like moustache with great elan. Its true that the moustache is back in vogue with Bollywood actors choosing the rugged and manly look over a clean shaven look. Abhishek Bachchan initiated the rugged and macho look and maintained it for a long time even when his peers were flaunting a metrosexual clean shaven image.
Sporting a rugged look comes naturally to B-town stars. In fact, almost half of the actors in Bollywood believe in the power of the moustache. It took me an entire year and much grooming to grow the moustache. My mother hates it though. She is waiting for me to shave it off and get her smooth faced bachcha back, Vivek Oberoi told the media, commenting on his moustached look in Rakta Charitra. Vivek plays the role of a political figure in the film. Much to the actors surprise, his moustache was well-received by people when Vivek recently walked the ramp for designers Shantanu and Nikhil at the Seagrams Blenders Pride Fashion Tour
Ajay Devgn, who played the role of Sultan Mirza, sported a moustache to do justice to his character in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai.
In Manorama 6 feet Under,Abhay Deol had a rugged look with a thick moustache and stubble. It was followed by Shah Rukh Khans moustachioed look as the loving husband Surinder Suri for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Then came Saif Ali Khan in Race,Arshad Warsi in Ishqiya. And now, with Devgn sporting a moustache in Aakrosh a film that deals with honour killings the style statement has come a full circle for Bollywood.
Aarya Babbar, who received critical acclaim for his role as a gangsters henchman in Madhur Bhandarkars Jail, will now be seen as a village inspector in Tees Maar Khan sporting a moustache. The one question people keep repeatedly asking me is whether the moustache is real. I have been receiving tons of compliments for my new look. Though one of the best compliments till date is my look being compared to that of Anil Kapoor in Ram Lakhan. Everyone on the sets has loved this new look and are planning to ape it, says the actor who took six weeks to grow his moustache. But it wasnt as easy as it sounds. Its irritating especially when I eat. But I hope the effort pays off and the audience love my new look, adds Aarya. Bollywoods chocolate boy,Shahid Kapoor will also be sporting a fuzzy upper-lip in his forthcoming film Mausam, where he plays a pilot.
With all the B-town actors sporting the moustachioed look,it seems like this trend is definitely here to stay.
