The police identified the accused as Amal N, 23, a native of Kerala. (Special arrangement)
The Hebbagodi police in Bengaluru Tuesday arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly stealing women’s undergarments from residential houses and publicly displaying them.
The incident came to light Monday after the police received information that a man was stealing women’s undergarments drying on terraces and in the courtyards of houses in Vidya Nagar, within the limits of Hebbagodi police station. The informant also alleged that the man wore the stolen garments, took photographs of himself, and displayed them publicly.
Acting on the alert, personnel from the Hoysala patrol vehicle rushed to the spot, verified the complaint, and took the suspect into custody. He was identified as Amal N, a native of Kerala who had moved to Bengaluru around six months ago and was staying in a rented house with a friend. The police said he is unemployed and holds a diploma qualification.
During questioning and initial investigation, the police found several photographs and videos on the accused’s mobile phone showing him wearing women’s undergarments. A subsequent search of his residence led to the recovery of additional women’s undergarments, which were allegedly stolen from nearby houses.
The police said the accused was caught by women in the area who made him remove the undergarments he was wearing before alerting the helpline Namma 112. Based on the information, the police took suo motu action, registered a case Tuesday and arrested him the same day.
“During the investigation, 20 women’s undergarments were recovered, all of which were allegedly stolen from the terraces/houses of nearby residential buildings,” said a police officer.
The Hebbagodi police registered the suo motu case against the accused under sections 303(2) (theft), 329(4) (criminal trespass), and 79 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)
