The crucial meeting of the governing body of Darul Uloom Deoband, the Majlis-e-Shoora,to decide the fate of Vice Chancellor Ghulam Muhammad Vastanvi began Saturday.
The Shoora will discuss reports by an inquiry committee on Vastanvis alleged remarks, praising Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, during its two-day meeting. The Indian Express had reported on July 21 that the three members of the panel were divided in their opinion and would submit separate reports. While the report of one member is said to be critical of Vastanvi, those of the other two are reportedly in his favour.
The Shoora will take up the reports for discussion only on Sunday,Vastanvi said.
Sources said that though the panel was expected to absolve Vastanvi of wrong-doing,his continuation as V-C has become difficult. Insiders said the Shoora till late in the night was split 8-7 against him staying on. Vastanvi is keen to not carry the stain of possible eviction from Deoband and may want to demit office with more dignity.
