Haryana’s major road-safety crackdown has revealed that Gurgaon has recorded the highest number of drunk drivers caught this year. Between January 1 and November 24, the police issued 63,073 drunk-driving challans statewide. With Gurgaon leading by a wide margin, followed by Faridabad and Karnal, the crackdown signals a strong shift toward stricter enforcement in high-risk urban zones.

Gurgaon topped the list with 24,972 drunk-driving challans, reflecting the district’s dense nightlife routes and heavy evening traffic. Faridabad followed with 7,402 challans, while Karnal, a key transit hub on NH 44, recorded 4,851 cases. “The numbers underline Haryana Police’s intensified monitoring across these high-risk corridors, backed by dedicated night-time patrolling,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.

“As part of the ongoing campaign, the police across districts are conducting regular special drives not only to curb drunk driving but also to check lane violations, noise pollution, and the misuse of red-blue flashlights. Weekly review reports are being used by the police headquarters to push districts towards more effective and result-oriented enforcement,” the spokesperson added.

All toll plazas across Haryana now have special police teams deployed from 6 pm to 10 pm, equipped with alco-sensors and e-challan machines.

“On-the-spot checks allow officers to act immediately against offenders, significantly boosting highway safety and deterring risky late-evening driving behaviour. While enforcement remains strict, police officials emphasise that the campaign’s primary goal is to change behaviour, not merely issue challans. The message is clear: drunk driving endangers the driver as well as every other commuter on the road. Haryana Police continues to appeal to citizens to drive responsibly and encourage their peers to avoid driving under the influence,” the police spokesperson said.

The police urged residents to treat safe driving as their personal safety shield, reminding them that road safety can be achieved only when everyone follows the rules and looks out for one another.

Bars and clubs are responsible if patrons drive away drunk

About a fortnight ago, DGP O P Singh said that bars and clubs can now be held responsible if a patron drives away drunk. “Under a new directive, establishments must ensure that intoxicated customers do not drive home—by deploying staff to monitor patrons, arranging cabs or designated drivers, and even coordinating with the police if someone refuses to follow the rules,” he said.

Singh also announced that offenders would face jail and that police personnel would be posted outside liquor shops to prevent people from drinking outside and driving off.

Singh further said this was not about random harassment or arbitrary checkpoints, but about balancing Gurgaon’s “vibrant nightlife with public safety”.

Singh also made a controversial statement, labelling owners of certain vehicles such as the Mahindra Thar and the Royal Enfield Bullet as “rogue elements”, arguing that the choice of vehicle sometimes reflected a reckless mindset.
