The leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha,Arun Jaitley,rightly charged Arjun Singh of giving a clean chit to his leader and then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi,and instead implicating then-Home Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. Singh was removed as MP CM within months of the Bhopal tragedy. If the home ministry was pressuring him to release Anderson,why didnt Singh complain to the PM? How could Anderson fly out of Bhopal and then out of the country without the knowledge of the PM?

The entry of corporate houses will facilitate government borrowing by increasing credit options and easing the governments borrowing constraints Keep it strict,IE,August 12. But the RBI itself has voiced its concern over the trade-off between inflation and credit flows to government. Thus the government has to necessarily establish its creditworthiness. It must first address lapses in fiscal discipline and come up with a roadmap to contain the fiscal deficit the harbinger of inflation.

Discussions have been proposed on the extant ownership and governance guidelines for banks in India. In view of this,and with a manageable fiscal deficit,opening up the banking space to new entrants may not be a very big problem,as weve had a demonstrably fine record of overseeing and implementing regulations. Our weathering the global meltdown has cast our regulatory systems in good light.

Real issues

The uproar is not about our athletes participation in the CWG The Games we play,IE,August 12. Everyone agrees that they should participate,and try and get a respectable medals tally. The uproar is about our hosting the CWG. First,the money being spent could have been better used on developing sports in India,on our sportspersons and facilities for them. Second,the reality has confirmed that any government spending is subject to leakage through corruption. By not hosting the CWG,we could have at least plugged one avenue for such leakage. Third,news about the alleged corruption has spread around the world. This has made a negative impact on our international image.

This is a strong message to our foes that no amount of terrorism can stall the progress,integrity,growth and development of our nation. The Taj is not only one of the worlds finest hotels but a heritage structure. This beautiful structure is also a tribute to all those who died in the 26/11 massacre.
