Manipur Government has decided to hand over to CBI the probe into killing of Manipur University Dean and professor Md Isslamudin inside university campus,official sources said on Thursday. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh here on Wednesday evening,they said.

The Government would also give an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the next kin of the professor who was shot down inside the university campus near here last Monday. Besides,it was also decided in the meeting to set up a police picket in the campus where hostels were searched by police and security personnel.

Around 600 students left hostels following the searches and harassment, a spokesperson of the Manipur University Students Union said.

Members of Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) at a meeting on Wednesday demanded resignation of Vice-Chancellor C Amuba on moral grounds for the killing of Islamudin,who was recently appointed proctor,MUTA president M Ranjit said. Ranjit charged the professor had requested for security and an official vehicle following his appointment as proctor,but the same was turned down.

Meanwhile,Superintendent of Police,Imphal West,L Kailun said 13 persons,including students,had been rounded for interrogation. Major insurgent outfit Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup (KYKL) had earlier claimed responsibility for the killing alleging the professor had been dividing students while he was the dean of students welfare at the university.
