CM Chavan sworn in as MLC

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan was sworn in as MLC on Saturday. Chavan,who became chief minister on November 11,2010,had to get elected to either of the two Houses of the state legislature before May 10 to keep his job. Some Opposition leaders criticised the swearing-in ceremony,saying it was a Congress programme because of the importance given to Congress leaders.

Court lets ED quiz Hasan Ali for 3 days

MUMBAI: A court in Mumbai on Saturday allowed the Enforcement Directorate to question Hasan Ali Khan,who is accused of stashing billions of dollars overseas,for three days even as he filed a fresh bail application. ED told the court that it wanted to confront him with certain disclosures made by Congress leader Amalendu Pandey,Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh and one K C Singh. Pandey and Singh have been questioned about Ali obtaining a fake passport.

Meghalaya MLAs,ministers get threat

SHILLONG: Four MLAs and two ministers of the ruling Congress in Meghalaya Saturday claimed to have received a threat SMS,allegedly from Garo National Liberation Army GNLA. Are you betraying the Garos? Retreat or face the consequences. GNLA, the SMS,sent from a Bangladeshi number,880-1927197749,read,according to East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi. GNLA is a nascent militant group floated by sacked Meghalaya Police SP Champion Sangma.

Woman raped by rly official in train

JAIPUR: A 25-year-old woman was allegedly raped by an off-duty Ticket Examiner in a moving train in Rajasthan8217;s Sirohi district,sources said Saturday. The victim,the daughter of a retired railways employee,was travelling alone in a general coach from Ajmer to Abu Road. She met the accused,Dinesh Dutt Mishra,whom she knew. He lured her to an AC coach on the pretext of getting her a better seat,and raped her. The accused has been arrested.

Father harassed, US citizen on fast

THANE: Alleging inaction by police,and the administration to redress her complaint of harassment by her family,a US citizen has begun a fast-unto-death in front of Thane police commissioner8217;s office. Jyoti Ghag said her father Atmaram Ghag,88,had been tortured and confined to his home in Thane since 1998 at the behest of the wife of her brother. Ghag claimed she had approached the police several times,but they have not acted against the accused for reasons best known to them.

Joshi is Western Naval Commander

MUMBAI: Vice Admiral D K Joshi Saturday took charge as chief of the Western Naval Command. He succeeded Vice Admiral Sanjeev Bhasin. A specialist in anti-submarine Warfare,Vice Admiral D K Joshi today took over as Western Naval Commander, said a Defence spokesman. Joshi has commanded the guided-missile corvette Kuthar,guided-missile destroyer Ranvir and aircraft-carrier INS Viraat.
