India flight-tests n-capable Shourya missile

BALASORE: India on Saturday flight-tested state-of-the-art nuclear-capable Shourya missile from the Integrated Test Range ITR at Chandipur off Orissa coast,about 15 km from here. The surface-to-surface missile took off from an underground silo at the launch complex-3 in the ITR at about 2.28 pm,defence sources said. It was the second developmental trial of the missile. The first test of the missile was successfully conducted on November 12,2008 from the same base,they said.

CBI finishes recording Jaswant statement

NEW DELHI: The CBI on Saturday completed the recording of the statement of senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh in connection with the agencys probe in the allocation of spectrum between 2001 and 2007.

Singh,the finance minister in the NDA regime,headed the Group of Ministers GoM on the issue of limited mobility and unified licensing during the period. The CBI had told the Supreme Court earlier this month that there had been violation of allocation norms during the NDA regime. Recently,the CBI also recorded statement of another former telecom minister,Arun Shourie.

Jagjit Singh remains critical,says hospital

MUMBAI: The condition of ghazal singer Jagjit Singh,who was operated upon at Lilavati Hospital here after suffering brain haemorrhage,continues to be critical,said the hospital. This is to confirm that Mr Jagjit Singhs condition remains critical, Niket V Mehta,managing trustee of Lilavati Hospital,said in a statement here on Saturday. We have to respect the patients privacy and therefore cannot comment further, he said.

Gehlot visits violence-hit area,urges peace

BHARATPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday urged the violence-affected people of Gopalgarh area here to restore harmony and not pay attention to provocative statements given by some irresponsible public representatives. Gehlot was on a visit to the area which witnessed communal clashes on September 14 following dispute on a public land. Nine persons were killed and several injured in the riots.

Maya suspends MLA Sagar for indiscipline

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP chief Mayawati on Saturday suspended sitting MLA from Bilsi Yogendra Sagar from the party on charges of indiscipline. Sagar has been suspended with immediate effect on charges of indiscipline,controversial behaviour and lack of interest in solving problems of the people,a party release said. It said the CM had taken a serious note of the charges of kidnapping and rape against the MLA,following which a non-bailable warrant was issued against him.

Brother of Chhota Rajan dies in Pune

PUNE: Prakash Nikalje 50,brother of underworld don Rajan Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan,died here in a hospital following a cardiac arrest on Saturday afternoon. Nikalje was staying in Pune in Wanawadi area and had a few cases registered against him in the past. He was also attached to a political party and was active at the Pune Race Course Workers Association.

Woman killed for giving birth to girl

MUZAFFARNAGAR: A woman was allegedly murdered by her husband and in-laws for giving birth to a girl at Gangoh in Saharanpur district,UP Police said on Saturday. Sania,who got married to Nauman one-and-a-half years ago,gave birth to a baby girl some time ago and since then she was being tortured mentally and physically,the victims father alleged in his complaint. Police have registered a case against 11 people including the victims husband and his parents for hanging her to death.

Air mishap averted at Chennai airport

CHENNAI: A major mishap was averted at Chennai airport on Saturday when a Delhi-bound private airliner which had been cleared for take-off stopped on the runway just as an Air India flight was about to land. Airport authorities have sought explanation from Jet Airways as to why the aircraft was stopped despite it being cleared for take-off.

Priest beaten to death by son,kin

BAHRAICH: A 70-year-old temple priest was beaten to death by his son and other relatives allegedly over a land dispute in Motipur area,police said. Pyare Baba was beaten to death on Friday by his son Surendra,his brother-in-law Puran and two others with whom he had a quarrel over a piece of land in Kuduwa village. Surendras brother-in-law Puran has been arrested,they said.

Bachchan suffers hairline rib fracture

NEW DELHI: Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan,who suffered a minor injury while shooting Ram Gopal Varmas Department,says he has got a minor fracture in the ribcage. Bachchan,68,resumed shooting just two days after he got hurt while filming an action sequence. Writing on his blog,Bachchan said he has to bear the pain for next one month as the ailment has no treatment.
