Jammu and Kashmir Police Sunday claimed to have solved within 24 hours the case of the killing of a policeman in Srinagar and arrested the alleged killer,a suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba militant.
We have cracked the case and arrested the militant responsible for the killing, DIG,Central Kashmir,Abdul Gani Mir said. The militant had killed the policeman on the directions of Lashkar commander Furqan.
Policeman Sajad Ahmad Parray was shot at and wounded outside the Hazrtabal shrine in Srinagar Friday. He died in hospital a few hours later.
Soon after the attack, the police constituted an SIT to probe the killing. The SIT cracked the case and arrested the militant responsible within 24 hours,Mir said.
The police identified the arrested person as Muzaffar Ahmad Mir,of Wangat,Kangan. During the investigations,it was revealed Muzaffar Ahmad Mir was behind the killing, said a police spokesperson. The Srinagar police arrested the militant and succeeded in recovering the weapon used in the commission of the crime.
The police said the attack was meant to unnerve them. Preliminary questioning of Muzaffar revealed that he had acted on the behest of Lashkar operational commander Furqan, who is based in PoK, the spokesman said. He had directed him to kill policeman in and around Hazratbal in order to unnerve the police force.
The police claimed Muzaffar told them that Furqan had directed him to choose the cops who are without arms in busy markets. He also said the pistol was delivered to him by Lashkar militant Muzaffar Moulvi, who operates from Sopore, the spokesman added. Muzaffar was a close associate of slain Lashkar commander Abdul Rehman.
The police said Muzaffar might provide vital clues about the killing of policemen in different parts of Srinagar city. Police is on job as vital clues are expected from the militant regarding the other cop killing cases that took place in Srinagar, the spokesman said.
